We might not dye our river green like some cities – mostly because we don’t really have a river in Decatur – but that doesn’t mean we don’t celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in style! In fact, Decaturites don’t celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, we celebrate St. Patrick’s Week!
To get the week started right, I recommend that you stop by Decatur Screen Print. They’re located on the second floor of the Garlic Thai/ New Orleans Sno Ball Cafe building at 340 W. Ponce. They have tons of green shirts printed with St. Pat’s-appropriate designs.
The shop also has some St. Patrick’s Day accessories:
And here are several opportunities where you can wear said shirts and accessories:
The Marlay House
March 12 – St. Patrick’s Day kick off celebration. Bagpipers at 2 p.m., Irish Dancers at 4:30 p.m., live Irish Music 6:30-9:30 p.m. and more pipers at 8 p.m.
March 15 – Free musical performance by one of the greatest uillean pipers alive, Paddy Keenan. Watch a YouTube clip of him here as proof of his greatness.
March 16 – Celebrate St. Patrick’s Eve with an Irish beer pairing dinner.
March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day! Live music, dancers and the pub’s new piano will get some play time.
Steinbeck’s
Join the Decatur Education Foundation at Steinbeck’s on Thursday, March 17 for an afternoon of St. Patty’s Day fun including bouncing, temporary tattoos, live music and more. The pub will offer kid-friendly food in addition to its regular yummy menu. Festivities run from 3-6 p.m. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Foundation. From 4 until 10 p.m. come for free live music, corned beef, Irish bangers and mash, fish and chips and Guinness.
Ale Yeah
The guys at Ale Yeah beer market will be running specials on everything Irish beginning March 14. Beer from Ireland as well as Irish style beers will be 10% off next week.
McGowan’s Oakhurst Pub
Oakhurst’s newest pub will be celebrating on March 17 with live traditional Irish music led by Mick Kinney on the pub’s front patio and Irish fare: shepherd’s pie and corned beef with cabbage.
Piece of Cake
Call ahead to order your very own Green Velvet Layer Cake. It’s just like Piece of Cake’s popular red velvet cake, but it’s green – yum! Also, if you stop by the store on St. Patrick’s Day wearing green, you’ll receive a FREE key lime cupcake.
Badda Bing
Stop by for a delicious St. Pat’s lunch on March 17. The lunch menu includes corned beef brisket, parsley potatoes, beer braised cabbage, baby shepard’s pie, salmon croquette, whole grain mustard sauce and Irish soda bread.
