Make sure to check out the November edition of GeorgiaTrend magazine. The City of Decatur has been named one of the Best Places to Work in Georgia for 2008. Function, a marketing and design firm in the City, also made the roster.
Now everyone can know that Decatur is not just a great place to live, it’s also a great place to work!

The City of Decatur held an Electronics Recycling Day this past Saturday at Decatur High School. David Junger, Assistant City Manager for Public Works reports that 1313 vehicles came through, 252 televisions were recycled and enough electronics were recycled to fill approximately six 54-foot tractor trailers. Thanks to the members of the Waste Management Advisory Board, DHS students and other volunteers, and the employees of Public Works for such a successful recycling effort. Think of all the electronics that were kept out of the landfill!

Decatur is seeking input from the community regarding annexation and urban farming. Go to www.decaturga.com and click on City Services (the City Hall building on the front page). You will see a link to Open City Hall. Click on that and register your name and address, read the information and post your opinions and comments. You may choose to remain anonymous next to your comment but you must register your name and address for verification.
Decatur is partnering with Peak Democracy and the Alliance for Innovation to be a pilot site for this program which allows public participation without having to attend a public meeting. Be one of the first to give your opinion online and read what others have to say. If you change your mind, you can always go back in and change your viewpoint.
The city will post a total of six questions for feedback over the next few months. At the end of the process, Peak Democracy will provide a report to the city that includes the number of participants, the opinions, and the quadrants in which participants live.

Starting this week you’ll be able to pay for parking on N. McDonough and East Court Square with your cell phone. Eric Groft, from StreetSmart, has been out since 7:30 a.m. this morning testing all the meters with his cell phone. We’ll be in testing mode during the next couple of days, but once the new instructions are posted on each meter, all 54 meters on N. McDonough and East Court Square will be ready to accept payments through cell phones.
Decatur is the first municipality to test the Pay-By-Cell service. You’ll still be able to pay with change, but the cell phone option allows you to pay for your meter, get a text message receipt and a reminder when the meter is about to expire all with one quick phone call.
The first time you use the Pay-By-Cell service will be free. If you choose to use the service again, you’ll be asked to register at www.goparknow.com to create an account.
We’ll post more details on the system once all the meters on N. McDonough and East Court Square are live.

Leonard on the Square
As you wander through the Old Courthouse Square, you may notice Leonard, the gentleman who keeps the square clean.
Leonard works hard and takes pride in keeping the downtown area clean. You will see him riding in his specially outfitted golf cart, or you may see him with the mini-sweeper keeping the streets and sidewalks in tip-top shape.
It is workers like Leonard that make Decatur such a great city in which to live, work and play.

Fab Friday in WePo 5-9 p.m.: The shops of West Ponce de Leon Avenue come together on the fourth Friday of each month to offer great specials and refreshments. For the first time at this event, TV’s will be recycled for a minimal fee of $10 cash only per TV set with exact change. There is no charge to recycle other items. Hopefully not! Come to the Decatur Old House Fair this Saturday to get tips and advice from the pros on repairing and maintaining your old house. Old does not mean historic! Anyone with a house that was built more than 10 years ago can get great information on making your house more energy efficient, adding on to your old house, hiring a contractor, and “greening” your old house.
Also, we’ll have over 30 exhibitors who are dying to give your free stuff to put in your free tote bag. All for the low bargain price of $10 a ticket in advance ($15 at the door)! If you are really looking for a deal, there will be free coffee too!

Many of our residents know the city’s senior engineer, John Madajewski, but I bet few are aware that he’s a talented woodturner. At the Oct. 20 Commission Meeting John presented two beautiful bowls he made and dedicated to the Decatur fire stations. The bowls are made from trees that were located by the fire stations.
The larger bowl was made from an ash tree that was removed for the Fire Station 2 construction. The darker bowl is from a 100 year old dying oak that was located behind Fire Station 1. Each bowl will be placed in its respective fire station once construction is complete. In the mean time, they’ll be on display at City Hall.
John has been woodturning for ten years. On the weekends, you’ll most likely find him in his garage surrounded by his tools and piles of wood. The image below shows off some of his other work. Pretty impressive, eh?

In the Fall there’s hardly a weekend that goes by in Decatur without a festival and this weekend is no exception. This Sunday is the Church Street Fall Festival. Hoopla, Java Monkey, Mingei World Arts and Taste will be offering discounts, raffles, candy, free cake and crafts.
Noon: TAG! at Java Monkey
Noon-3 p.m.: Sugar Skull Cookies and Fortune Tellers at Mingei
1 p.m.: Magician at Hoopla
2 p.m.: Bundt Cake Bake Off at Taste
Word on the street is that the bundt cakes are crazy good. Sounds like I’ll have to go check it out myself – for the sake of blog research, of course.
