For those of you who haven’t made your daily run to Starbucks, Brickstore or Sweet Melissa’s yet, here’s a preview of the crosswalk you’ll be using. As mentioned in an earlier post, the E. Ponce de Leon crosswalk was replaced with a new and improved design. The stamped brick material is only slightly raised (so it’s still handicap accessible) and two white lines will be added on either side to make it more visible to drivers.

Cell Phone Parking
Posted in Sidewalk Talk, Transportation, Uncategorized, tagged parking, Pay-By-Cell on October 27, 2008 | 3 Comments »
Starting this week you’ll be able to pay for parking on N. McDonough and East Court Square with your cell phone. Eric Groft, from StreetSmart, has been out since 7:30 a.m. this morning testing all the meters with his cell phone. We’ll be in testing mode during the next couple of days, but once the new instructions are posted on each meter, all 54 meters on N. McDonough and East Court Square will be ready to accept payments through cell phones.
Decatur is the first municipality to test the Pay-By-Cell service. You’ll still be able to pay with change, but the cell phone option allows you to pay for your meter, get a text message receipt and a reminder when the meter is about to expire all with one quick phone call.
The first time you use the Pay-By-Cell service will be free. If you choose to use the service again, you’ll be asked to register at www.goparknow.com to create an account.
We’ll post more details on the system once all the meters on N. McDonough and East Court Square are live.

I know a lot of you have been looking forward to this moment ever since you saw “Variable message board” itemized on the city’s 2008-2009 Budget. Well, the wait is over because the City of Decatur’s very own electronic alert sign arrived yesterday!
O.k., that first sentence might not apply to anyone, but there’s no doubt that this new piece of equipment will be very useful.
The InstALERT comes with a number of pre-programmed messages and has the ability to upload customized alerts.
Public Works director, David Junger, brought it over to the City Hall parking lot to show us how it works.
All the messaging is controlled by a PDA:

Valet parking has arrived in downtown Decatur. Shane at Saba has organized a valet service to operate out of N. McDonough Street by the bandstand on the square. The cost of valet parking is $5. Right now the service is available Friday and Saturday evenings from 5-11 p.m., but the company plans to expand to week nights in the upcoming months.
Scoot Around Decatur

Anyone else out there jealous of all those people scooting around the city? Scooting around town seems so chic and European – not to mention eco-friendly. Maybe I’m romanticizing scooters too much, but that doesn’t lessen my desire for one of my own. Lucky for me, Decatur now has two great scooter-riding options.
Twist ‘n Scoot has just opened up on West Ponce across from The Grange and next to Whit’s End. The store offers a wide range of new and used scooters (sporty, cute, high performance, vintage styles etc.). I’ve got my eye on this beauty:

While saving up for my very own Stella, I can rent a scooter from Dads Zip Motor Scooter. The company offers scooter sharing services. Depending on the membership plan you choose, you can rent a scooter for as low as $6 a day. Sign up for a ride and a scooter will be delivered to a designated location (there are a number of locations within the City of Decatur), and helmets and gas are included.
I can’t wait. I’ll be scooting around looking chic and European in no time!
