Join us tonight from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the City Commission meeting room of Decatur City Hall, 509 N. McDonough St., for a workshop about the Clairemont-Commerce-Church Street corridor pedestrian safety and bike lane improvements.
The project is based on Decatur’s 2008 Community Transportation Plan and is a project in the 2010 Strategic Plan to encourage healthy lifestyles and active living in Decatur. The purpose of the work is to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.
We need to give careful We need to give careful thought to reducing Commerce to two driving lanes between Clairemont and Church. At certain times of day, Commerce backs up through either Church or Clairemont, or both, and the volume of traffic will not decrease just because driving lanes are removed. A part of the problem is the timing of the lights, but fixing them alone will not solve the problem. The backup on Commerce westbound is now often to the Methodist Church parking lot. If the road is narrowed, that backup can easily go as far as College Ave.
