The City of Decatur has been awarded the designation of Tree City USA for a 2nd year! The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the Georgia Forestry Commission in order to recognize successful community forestry programs.

To qualify as a Tree City USA, a town or city must meet four standards.
- A Tree Board or Department
- A Tree Care Ordinance
- A Community Forestry Program With an Annual Budget of at Least $2 Per Capita
- An Arbor Day Observance and Proclamation

Recently I moved to Decatur from Tallahassee, FL (another designated Tree City USA) and one of the reasons we chose to live in Decatur is because of its beautiful tree canopy. The trees in Decatur are a definite selling point and research shows that having trees and nature increases home values. I support the tree ordinance. Ultimately it benefits for ALL citizens in the City of Decatur. If anyone is interested in information on this point, please contact me at bkostka@att.net. I was a city appointee on the Tallahassee Citizens Canopy Road Committee for three years and would be happy to share what I learned (assuming I can find it in the boxes that still need to be unpacked LOL!).
