A group of us from City Hall decided to check out the brand-spanking-new Square Pub today for lunch. Seeing as there isn’t much written up on Decatur’s newest restaurant (except for here and here), I figured I’d take a stab at describing our lunch so you can get a better idea of what it’s all about.
We shared a fried avocado as an appetizer. I was skeptical when I first saw this on the menu even though the owner said it’s already become one of their most popular items. I was expecting heavily-battered, mushy avocado. What we got was a perfectly ripe avocado, covered in breadcrumbs and lightly fried. We gobbled it up so fast that I didn’t even think about taking a photo until there was only one piece left:
Half the table ordered the pub’s fried bologna sandwich, which looked delicious. It includes a big slice of bologna, cheese and your choice of fries, tater tots or sweet potato tots:
To top off the whole meal, we tried out the fried oreos. My mouth is watering just thinking about them! And don’t think it was all unhealthy. The oreos were served with a strawberry sauce on the side!
Joking aside, the pub also has a great southwestern salad and a number of, er, healthier options if fried avocados, bologna and oreos are not your thing.
I know I’ll be back at some point after work so I can “research” The Square Pub’s extensive beer list.
