Ordinance O-10-04 restricting the use of coasters, skateboards, in-line skates and similar devices in the pedestrian preference zone of the downtown business district became effective on June 1st. For a full description of the changes and a map of the zone, please refer to pages 11-18 of the May 3, 2010 City Commission agenda.
One can still ride a bicycle in the area. And skateboards are always welcome at the McKoy Park skate park (1000 Adams Street). For more information, contact the Decatur Police Department at 404-373-6551.
So, am I to understand that last week, when I walked with my kids (who were both riding scooters), from our house, up Church Street, along Ponce and to Little Shop of Stories, that we were breaking a City Code? Can someone clarify this?
I have been unable to find the map that you reference, showing the zone. And, if this is the case, can the City please provide scooter racks so that we can still make this a pleasant trip downtown while not offending anyone? Or can we use the bike racks? Where are those, by the way?
Skateraid should move it’s venue! I know it’s extreme but it would make a statement. Does Decatur get any monies from hosting this event?
The map is on page 13 of the referenced document.
The scooters can use the bicycle racks but I’ll pass along your suggestion for a dedicated place. There are bicycle racks located throughout Downtown Decatur and funds are included in the proposed FY2010-2011 budget to place more racks in the area.
Meredith,
So, if I accompany my kids and they are on scooters, are we breaking the ordinance? I am still unclear.
