The Whiz Biz is having their Grand Opening tonight from 6:00pm-6:30pm at Glennwood Academy prior to Glennwood’s winter concert which starts at 7pm. They will be selling items from their sustainable product line, including bags, purses, pillows, and jewelry. I’ve seen a few samples, and they are very cool. They have a bag made from a Doritos bag! The plastic is ironed between wax paper, and then sewn together. Who knew?
The Whiz Biz (short for ‘Whiz Business’) started out of a 4th/5th grade afterschool program called Whiz Kids, which awards kids with Accountability Bucks for doing the right thing. The program operates a bank, a post office, and a kid-run Whiz Kids Store.
The store operators were not satisfied with the store structure because they realized the store was not offering a chance to earn any profit. The children decided they wanted to create their own business with their own sustainable product line. They developed a business plan, and decided that all the profits would be donated to Invisible Children, a charity which supports children affected by war in Uganda.
If you can’t make it for that narrow window tonight NEVER FEAR! Whiz Biz has many other wonderful things planned in the coming months and there will be ample opportunity to visit them at the program. I will keep you posted.
